Clients receiving O&P services in Cambodia report levels of psychological distress and PTSD that are well above those of the general population. In this study O&P professionals were trained to screen their clients for mental health problems and to facilitate peer support groups for clients identified as having problems.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the incidence of mental health problems among prosthetic and orthotic users.
Define 'task shifting' and the role it can play in addressing human resource shortages in low-and-middle income countries.
Describe how a peer-support program can be structured to help address mental health problems in prosthesis and orthosis users.
Reflect on the importance of culturally adapting outcome measures and interventions.
