Evaluation of the Prevalence and Risk Factors Influencing the Use of a Second Cranial Orthosis in the Treatment of Deformational Plagiocephaly-Brachycephaly (DPB)
Medical Research Scientist Cranial Technologies Casa Grande, Arizona, United States
This investigation sought to explore the prevalence and the risk factors that are associated with the need for a second cranial orthosis helmet for infants with deformational plagiocephaly. There is very little literature on the topic of the need for a second helmet in this patient population.
Learning Objectives:
Articulate the prevalence of the need for a second cranial remolding orthosis for deformational plagiocephaly-brachycephaly.
Identify 3 predictive factors associated with the need for a second cranial remolding orthosis in the treatment of deformational plagiocephaly-brachycephaly.
Describe 2 clinical implications of this work and how study findings can support providers in the evidence-based treatment of head shape deformities.
Identify which cranial deformity type is more likely to need a second cranial orthosis (e.g., brachycephalic, plagiocephaly, or mixed).
Describe the importance of an early referral and how the age at which treatment is initiated is correlated with the need for a second cranial orthosis.
