Justina S. Appel, PhD, CO, BOCP, LPO is a nationally recognized clinical specialist, educator, researcher, and consultant in the field of orthotics and prosthetics (O&P), with nearly four decades of experience advancing patient-centered, evidence-based care. She holds a PhD in Human Services Management with a concentration in nonprofit leadership, along with a master’s degree in education and extensive clinical training in prosthetics and orthotics.
Dr. Appel has held senior clinical, educational, and leadership roles across healthcare, industry, and nonprofit sectors, including Director of Orthotics and Prosthetics at Shriners Hospitals for Children and the National Director of Education and Clinical Support at Allard. She currently serves as a Clinical Specialist with NuTech Synergies and as a grant writing and editing consultant supporting mission-driven organizations.
Her scholarly and clinical contributions span pediatric orthotics, material science innovations, prosthetic and orthotic outcomes research, and the integration of novel materials—such as silver-based fabrics and carbon composites. Dr. Appel is a published author, peer reviewer, and frequent national presenter, with research appearing in peer-reviewed journals and professional publications.
A committed professional leader, Dr. Appel has served as President and long-time Education Program Coordinator for the Louisiana Association of Orthotists and Prosthetists, as well as on national boards and research committees. Her work consistently bridges clinical excellence, research rigor, education, and advocacy to improve outcomes for diverse patient populations.
